Dover Court | Orinda, California | 5,000 square feet
After 15 years in their 1970s suburban ranch house, our clients asked for a complete remodel. Landscape designers, gourmands and artifact collectors, they wanted a lively space with room to cook and custom display cabinetry. We created a new structural logic, replacing the two-story western wall with four glass doors that open the living room and double-island kitchen (including wood-fire oven and beverage station) to a view of the valley and pool, punctuated with 60,000 pounds of water-sculpted boulders. Dark integrally-colored stucco warms the exterior and emphasizes the garden. Inside, we revived the classic Douglas fir beams, re-shaping rafters, adding posts and straps, and sandblasting to a sophisticated patina matching Applegate Tran’s contemporary finishes of tile, steel and stone. Course touches fine throughout, without a trace of trim.
